CSS Variable Generator

Generate CSS custom properties (variables) from an editable list. Add color, spacing, and font variables with automatic color detection — output a clean :root block ready to copy. All in your browser, no upload.

About the CSS Variable Generator

This CSS variable generator runs entirely in your browser. Add variable rows with a name and value, and the tool generates a clean :root block with CSS custom properties. Color values are automatically detected, showing a color picker alongside the text input. Use the preset buttons to quickly load common color or spacing tokens. Nothing is uploaded — all processing happens locally with JavaScript.

How to use

  1. Click + Add variable to create a new row, or use a preset button to load a starter set.
  2. Enter a variable name (without the -- prefix — it's added automatically) and a value.
  3. If the value is a color (hex, rgb, hsl), a color picker appears automatically for easy selection.
  4. Click Generate CSS to produce the :root block, then Copy CSS to copy it.
  5. Use the trash icon on each row to remove individual variables.

What are CSS custom properties?

CSS custom properties (also called CSS variables) allow you to define reusable values in your stylesheet. They are declared in a :root selector and referenced with the var() function. This makes it easy to maintain consistent design tokens (colors, spacing, fonts) across your project and implement features like theming with minimal code changes.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to include the -- prefix in the name? No, the tool adds it automatically. Just type the variable name (e.g., primary-color).

What value formats are supported? Any valid CSS value: colors (#hex, rgb(), hsl()), lengths (16px, 1rem), strings, numbers, and more. Color values get a color picker for convenience.

Is my data uploaded anywhere? No. Everything happens locally in your browser.
